SOSGC

We are an educational project that aims to inform residents of the Southern Gold Coast about the permanent impacts of stage 4 of the light rail will cause to the southern end of the coast.

The government will commence community consultation on the 12th of July.

Our goal is to educate and inform our fellow residents.

TOP 8 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD STOP THE LIGHT RAIL MOVING SOUTH

What they are NOT telling you but you should know.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

Did you know that the Gold Coast holds a priceless archaeological jewel? A 5000-year-old man made structure is being threatened by the light rail

Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration, we must protect it for generations to come.

ENVIRONMENT

Burleigh hill is an aboriginal sacred site and a koala conservation area. It holds a fragile ecosystem that will be disrupted with the construction of the light rail.

Our pristine Tallebudgera and Currumbin creeks are also at risk. Pollution, and amenity will be affected by stage 4 of the light rail extension.

HIGH DENSITY CHAOS

With the light rail come changes in the City Plan, allowing higher density buildings and potentially no height restrictions. This will open the floodgates for developers of high rises everywhere on the Southern Gold Coast. The ugly concrete canyon created by the light rail along the GC Highway will extend south from Surfers Paradise all the way to Coolangatta.
Is this what you want in 10-15 years?

Traffic and parking chaos, sewage system overload, environmental decline. This is NOT the Gold Coast we want and we won’t let it happen on the Southern Gold Coast.

NEW TECHNOLOGY

The light rail uses technology from the 70s. We’re in 2021, there are alternative modes of transportation such hydrogen and solar electric buses that are much cheaper and less disruptive.

Do you think we should spend $179 million/km of tax payer money for an archaic tech? The Southern Gold Coast can do so much better! Cities like London, Brisbane, Adelaide and many other use electric and hydrogen buses.

HEAVY RAIL

Why are we not connecting the Gold Coast Airport to Varsity Lakes train station?

Although studies have not yet been completed for the preserved Gold Coast Heavy Rail Corridor between Varsity Lakes and Gold Coast Airport, tourists, residents, businesses and the entire QLD can benefit from heavy rail investment rather than light rail.

LIFESTYLE

This is why we love the place we live, for our kids, for safety, for the surf, for happiness. Over-development attracts greed and a culture that does not belong to the Southern Gold Coast.

Look after our beaches, our World Class Waves, our schools, our roads and keep it for generations to come. What we have is priceless! Don’t take it for granted, we need to ACT NOW!

07

ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY

It is illogical to spend over $179 million per KM of light rail. Our studies report the flawed spending of our tax money.

Money speaks and it creates things. Shouldn’t we use it wisely?

08

RESILIENCE IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING ENVIRONMENT

Climate change is rapidly changing our cities and our lives. This is about preserving what we have and slowing down unprecedent disruption of our eco-systems and our very survival on Earth.

Development can be aligned with the environment. We have time and we can do much better than that.
