Save our Southern Gold Coast launched on Thursday 8th July at Tallebudgera Creek in front of a passionate crowd of 50 plus local activists while the President of SOSGC Kath Down delivered her maiden speech.
Kath who is a Palm Beach resident spoke eloquently on the five main objectives and the 10 reasons why SOSGC are against the Light Rail travelling south along the Gold Coast Highway to Coolangatta.
SOSGC is all for public transport but would prefer that the State Government and City of Gold Coast use modern technology such as hydrogen solar electric buses instead of light rail trams and advocate for the continuation of the heavy rail on the M1 from Varsity to the Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta.
While Stage 3 from Broadbeach to Burleigh appears to be a done deal although so far there has not been any construction, SOSGC completely opposes Stage 4 from Burleigh to Coolangatta siting a number of major impacts such as evironment, economic, cultural heritage, social impact, traffic congestion, continous high rise development on 800 metres of the track and the resumption of land & small business.
SOSGC does not see the need for the light rail considering the obvious carnage it would inflict on the narrow southern corridor and that there is already a regular bus service happening.
Community consultations sessions commence on Monday 12th & Tuesday 13th July from 10am at the Tallebudgera Leisure centre open to the public. SOSGC will attend to ask the questions and will post the answers.
SOSGC is a group of highly qualified experts and academics in the field of environment, economics, engineering, social science, town planning who will examine the facts and produce a solid argument to the State Government and Council that modern sustainable buses and the extension of the heavy rail, would be preferable modes of transport ensuring that the character and the charm of the Southern Gold Coast is retained and protected.
SOSGC is a non for profit non political organisation seeking the best option for public transport and considering the billions dollars that a light rail would cost the taxpayer, buses and trains would be a far better option than light rail in view of the facts that the Southern Gold Coast would be radically changed and impacted forever by the construction of stage 4 of the light rail.
There is a timeless quote that says, ” Don’t destroy what you came to enjoy!”
